The future is the theme of this book. Readers in the Christian theological tradition may recall Augustine’s confessions and know that this book is therefore about something that does not exist. “Who therefore can deny that the future does not yet exist?”1 Apparently, no one can. To offer a book about the future, I therefore must confront the brief caveat that Augustine’s text opens up: the future does not yet exist.
