This book is about hope and despair and the way in which as family thera- pists we meet and engage with this territory of human experience. For many families, the experience of hope and despair is complex. It can reflect a constellation of individual and family histories, current patterns and dynam- ics, the stresses of everyday life, the severity and chronicity of the family’s struggle, and their exposure to abuse, adversity, tragedy and social injustice. Beyond these immediate and personal constellations lie the overarching cultural and social contexts that create the social conditions of individuals’ and families’ relationships to hope and despair. Not surprisingly, engagement with clients’ experiences has a parallel in therapists’ own experience of hope and hopelessness. Psychotherapy itself stands as an activity of hope, for the collaborative project of client/s and therapist is always about the possibility of change. However, at the same time, as therapists we often find ourselves challenged by hopelessness and struggling with hope. We will also note that despite the frame of hope that psychotherapy offers, therapeutic practices also have the capacity to contri- bute to clients’ experience of hopelessness and, in some situations, clients’ despair is unmediated within the limits of what we have to offer.
