The idea for this volume origi¬ nated with Mark Hirsch of the Smithsonian Institution Press. He encouraged me to take on the task of compiling and editing the essays, and he offered enthusiastic and skillful editorial support throughout the process. The germ of the idea, however, had sprouted a few years earlier. In 1990 I de¬ livered a paper at the meeting of the British Association of American Studies, held at the University of Exeter; Richard Maltby and Ruth Vasey also deliv¬ ered papers there. Later that year I chaired a panel for the American Studies Association meeting in New Orleans in which Richard and Ruth delivered pa¬ pers and I offered commentary. Gary Kulik, then editor of the American Quar¬ terly, asked us to submit our essays for publication and subsequently asked me to coedit the issue on movie censorship that would appear in December 1992. I thank Gary for his encouragement and continuing support over the years.
