The current electrical power systems switch from the traditional producer-centric grid to the advanced consumer-centric grid called the smart grid [1,2]. Not only will consumers with installed smart metering equipment be able to adjust their consumption habits according to market price signals received from the smart grid, but also, thanks to new technological solutions, will those consumers become an essential element in real-time alignment of energy demand and sup- ply within the local area. To allow for efficient control of such complex system, retail consumers will be aggregated in the virtual power plants. An example of a planned virtual power plant project is the four-year, 21 million EcoGrid project for the Danish island of Bornholm [3]. However, in addition to technical aspects of the smart grid, the establish- ment of a supporting market system is crucial.
