For many years airplane designers have realized that by reducing parasite drag. that drag
caused by the shape or form of the aireraft, its performance could be greatly inereased. Early
steps in this direction were the changes from biplane to monoplane designs, the elimination
of external struts and wires, the incorporation of retractable landing gears, ete. In spite of
all these advaneements, the average conventional airplane of today has two to four times the
drag that would be necessary if all its functions could be incorporated within its wing alone.
