1 INTRODUCTION Reviving the Silk Roads On 20 July 2013, the New York Times website published a photostory titled ‘Hauling New Treasure Along the Silk Road’.1 Its author, Keith Bradsher, has a reputation for exposing the dark side of American mul- tinationals driven by the logic of global capitalism into finding and main- taining cheap labour and low production costs in emerging economies such as China.
