Money is changing, and the systems we use to interact with it are as well. Since humans could talk, we have found ways to value other items, initially with valuable commodities such as salt, then precious metals, then paper and instruments representing these metals, then paper representing the products of a nation, then numbers on computers representing this paper, and now numbers representing value untied to governments and tied instead to our international, globalized economy. The world’s economy has increasingly become dominated by international companies running international operations. Cotton grown in Brazil can be shipped on Chinese ships, assembled in Bangladeshi factories, designed by German firm, sold at a Spanish fashion house in the United States to Japanese tourists. International economies are inseparably linked, yet there is no international standard of value, there is the American Dollar, controlled by the American government, the Euro controlled by European governments, and many other currencies. But these currencies do not reflect the interests of the users of these currencies, but rather the needs and necessities of their governments. Cryptocurrencies, at their core, aim to tackle this dilema. In order to do this, it is also necessary to replace traditional financial institutions, which have historically existed in close collaboration with national governments, with decentralized alternatives. These can come in the form of decentralized lenders, exchanges, payment providers, Initial Offerings of tokens, wallets, etcetera. While in their infancy, these DAOs (Decentralized Autonomous Organizations) and other institutions will be the service providers of a new wave of money and financial innovation which is only comparable to the internet itself. These institutions already allow for near instantaneous, anonymous connections between international clients without KYC, with no wire fraud (thanks to blockchain technology) and with stable returns. While these technologies are far from perfect (many have been hacked or had other vulnerabilities) understanding them will be critical if one is to understand the nature of money in the age of cryptocurrencies, and that is what this book aims to do.
